Social Change: #Illridewithyou

Twitter-Button-psd42172Social Media is a way to keep in touch with old friends, coordinate parties, and post photos but can it also be an engine for social change? The recent terrorist attack in Sydney, Australia, ended with the loss of three lives and 4 injuries after 16 hours.  An event like this is likely to send a flurry of tweets, status updates, and speculation zipping through the web, feeding the instant-gradification culture but along with the normal buzz and information spreading around this unfortunate happening, something new started. Twitter users created #Illridewithyou, a hashtag aiming to connect commuters with Muslims weary of donning their religious garments on public transportation in a meet-up buddy system to dissuade and counter hatred.

What do you think of #Illridewithyou?  Could this be a pivotal point for social media and its immediate impact on social change?

  1. Can I just say what a comfort to uncover an individual
who really knows what they’re discussing on the internet.

You certainly know how to bring an issue to light and
make it important. More people ought to check this out and understand this side of the story.

It’s surprising you are not more popular given that you definitely possess the gift.

  2. Aw, this was a very nice post. Finding the time and actual effort to create
a top notch article… but what can I say… I hesitate a whole lot and don’t manage to get nearly anything done.
